How does a father show affection for his family…especially to our daughters? In Vietnam we have the term “Con Gai Ruou”. The sound of these words alone carry a meaning that can melt a daughter’s a heart, no matter where she may be in this world. But, do you know where the meaning of “con gai ruou” comes from?

The meaning of “con gai ruou”

In Southeast Asia, people still overestimate the importance of having sons as their firstborn.

“You may have a buffalo and a pig, but without a daughter you are incomplete”
In Southeast Asia, people still overestimate the importance of having sons as their firstborn.
Traditionally, families that have sons first are blessed, because it is believed that sons are to be worshipped and carry on the family lineage.
Daughters on the other hand, are kept at a distance. Since it is an inevitable fact that when she is wed, she will take the name of her future husband and will longer be their child.
These traditional Asian stereotypes bring along with it a significant psychological influence that affects family life in Vietnam in particular.

‘Can you go and get this for me, my dear’ he’d say
A father’s love for his daughter
But now, in modern society, people’s ideologies are beginning to open.
Gender roles and equality is slowly, but surely becoming normalized. Whether your firstborn is a girl or a boy is irrelevant. The happiness of a family is built on the love that each sibling gives to each other.
There are no words that can describe the love between father and daughter. It is as special as it is sacred.
It may not be the tough love that we teach our sons, or the softness that our mothers give to our girls. It is simply, Con Gai Ruou…
