Pair your mid-autumn mooncakes with Son Tinh rice liquor
Mid-autumn festival is a fantastic time for families to get together. Kids are enthralled by lion dances, parades, lanterns and presents, while the adults begin to notice an abundance of mooncakes building up.
These indulgent treats carry an equally indulgent calorie count, so they’re best enjoyed with the family and accompanied by a glass of ruou.
Fortunately, we’ve put together the perfect guide for this very occasion. Local Hanoi cafe Loa Phuong bought the mooncakes, and we provided the ruou to help make the perfect bitter and sweet combinations.
Thap cam and Son Tinh Roseapple
We’re kicking off with the traditional Vietnamese mooncake flavour: ham, barbecue pork, chicken, duck and salted egg yolk.
The mildly sweet, light and fruity taste of Son Tinh Roseapple makes the perfect partner to the mooncakes savoury ingredients – its salty, heavy, lard-based pastry being offset nicely by the tannins and acidity in the ruou.
Lotus seed mooncake and Son Tinh Apricot
Lotus seed mooncakes, with their chewy baked skin and egg yolk, require a fruity partner to offset their powerful savoury flavours. Son Tinh Apricot livens up the mooncake party with generous ripe fruit flavours, refreshing acidity and silky soft tannins.
Red bean mooncakes and Son Tinh Red Plum
We’ve paired this classic mooncake flavour with Son Tinh Red Plum, harmonising its fruity, floral notes with the sweet red bean filling.
The mild acidity in Son Tinh’s tart red plums cleanses the palate, offsetting nicely with the baked skin of the mooncake.
